Facebook expands its research into artificial intelligence by collaborating with new academics

Facebook expands its research

Facebook's research on artificial intelligence was launched four years ago to focus on science and technology through frequent investment in academia and cooperation with academic communities. It is now expanding further with new academic cooperation in Pittsburgh, Seattle, London and Menlo Park.
Facebook says this dual-integration model is common on Facebook AI Research (FAIR), and most researchers from around the world divide their time between FAIR and university.
The first collaboration in Pittsburgh with Jessica Hodgens of Carnegie Mellon University, which will focus on robots. Her research focuses on computer graphics, animation, and robotics with a focus on generating and analyzing human movement. She will also work at Facebook's real-world Facebook lab. Abhinav Gupta of Carnegie Mellon will join her and will focus on broad visual and robotic learning, self-learning and reflection. They will hold part-time Carnegie Mellon University positions.
The second collaboration is in Seattle, with Luke Zettlemoyer who is associate professor at Paul G. Allen School of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Washington. It will focus on computational numerology, including deep learning methods to understand multilingual language.
Then, the third cooperation in London, with Andrea Vidaldi, an assistant professor of engineering science at the University of Oxford. He will look at image understanding, specifically about uncontrolled learning through large and diverse visual data sets and by understanding three-dimensional engineering logic. Bloomsbury AI will also join FAIR in London.
The last collaboration was in Milano Park, California with Jitendra Malik, of the University of California at Berkeley.
Apart from that, Facebook claims to plan to support a number of PhD students so that they can conduct research in collaboration with researchers at FAIR and university faculty.
